Rain, reported from 4 to 5 inches, washed out a culvert 1 1/2 miles west of Beattie [near Summit] Sunday evening, causing 14 cars of an eastbound doubleheader freight train to be wrecked.
The crew escaped injury but 32 head of fat steers were killed or injured so badly they had to be shot and practically all of 200 sheep were lost in the smashup. 28 head of cattle were saved. The engines and three cars passed the bad spot in the track before the wreck occurred; track was torn up for about 150 feet and heavy damage was incurred to the cars as well as for their contents, which included sugar, grain, coal, rock, potatoes, and other items. Wrecking crews were called immediately and section men from all nearby towns were ordered to the scene. Train service was held up Monday and Tuesday and rain further hampered repair work. Service was expected to be resumed Wednesday. Large crowds visited the wreck Monday, viewing the twisted steel car beams and the splintered cars which were piled as high as the telegraph poles next the track.
In 1946, the county's big caterpillar tractors were being used to pull hedge and large tree stumps along the road from Axtell to Macville, which is now known as Highway 110, in preparation of widening and graveling the same.
The year 1946 also saw the institution of the school lunch program. Mrs. Lee Welborn was the first supervisor and meals were 15¢ each.
Other 1946 events were:
The Norris Grain Co. of Kansas City purchased the line of Robinson country elevators, which included the local business firm. Thomas H. Baker, manager, was retained as was his assistant, Adolph Vossen.
In 1947, a small group of people started a move away from the "institutional denominalism" of the mainline churches and established a Pentecostal Church in Axtell.
In 1948, Highway K-110, along with the city streets, were paved and oiled. Lights were added to the ball fields at the city park in August of 1949.
