Landreth - Popkess Funeral Home - 205 4th St.
In 1944 Theron and Garth Smith purchased this house from Arthur
Anderson and converted it into a funeral home. In 1956, William
Landreth and Arthur Thornburg purchased the funeral business from
the Smiths and moved into this home. In 1986, the funeral business
was sold to Roger Popkess but Bill Landreth continues to operate
the home under the employ of Landreth Popkess Funeral Home.
Axtell Grain Company - 305 5th St.
Axtell Grain Company. Former owners of this company included
Bill Gallagher, George Stueve, Bob and Pat Graham. In 1982, it was
purchased from Graham's by: Leonard Rottinghaus, Dan Rottinghaus,
Regis Koelzer, Jerald Heiman and Clarence Wullschleger. Recently
Mr. Dan Rottinghaus began duties as manager. He succeeds Brian
Deters. Over the years improvements have been made, and to date it
has storage capacity for 545,000 bushels.
Nemaha Marshall Rural Electric Coop 402 Prairie St.
The Electric cooperative was established in 1938. In 1951, when
this building was completed and dedicated, the R.E.C. served 3,800
members with 1,800 miles of line. With the declinning number of
farmsteads, the R.E.C. today serves 3,180 members over 1,600 miles
of electrical wire. The manager today is Fenton "Buddy"
Norwood.
Peschel's Food Mart - 405 Maple St.
In operation since August of 1999, Rollie and Brenda assumed
ownership of P & M Mart from Patty and Mike Krogman. Peschel's
is the town's only full line grocery store. If what you want is not
on the shelves, tell Rollie and he will be happy to order it for
you if he can.
Axtell Lumber Inc. 304 5th St.
In 1985, John and Linda Johnson brought Meyer Lumber &
Hardware and incorporated it as Axtell Lumber Inc. In February,
1998, John and Linda Johnson sold the lumberyard to Tom and Donna
Rottinghaus and Derek Heinen. Axtell Lumber offers a full line of
lumber and hardware needs. They specialize in sheds and
outbuildings for farms and businesses.
Axtell Truss Inc. - 2828 Pony Express Highway
In 1995, the truss business was increasing so rapidly that John
and Linda Johnson, owners of Axtell Lumber, found a need to build a
bigger and more efficient building to handle its truss operation.
Previously, the trusses had been built on the grounds of the Axtell
Lumber Company in the city. With their new building and new site,
they are now capable of turning out larger trusses at a faster pace
than ever before. When John and Linda sold the lumberyard in
February, 1998 to Tom and Donna Rottinghaus and Derek Heinen, this
gave Johnny more time to work with his Truss Company. The Truss
Company is now under the ownership of Mr. Brian Deters.
Dave's Hardware - Maple St.
Dave's Hardware is operated by Dave and Sheryl Ronnebaum and
they are a registered Maytag Dealer as well as carrying other
appliance lines. They offer complete plumbing and heating service
as well as sale and repair of major and minor appliances. They also
carry most of your hardware needs: tools, pipe, bulbs, nuts and
bolts, wire and other electrical needs.
