It is so neat to see Axtell being recognized for its true beauty. I am currently atttending Emporia State University studying in Business Education. He was very proud of Axtell and the surronding community. It is times like that, that truely show you how close of a family the Axtell community is.

My name is Chuck Alfers. My wife, Sanna, and I are now living in Anchorage, Alaska. I work for Alaska Village Electric Co-op. I graduated from Axtell in 1994. I have lived in Axtell all my life. I married Sanna Kinnunen from Espoo, Finland in November of 1994. We have been here in Alaska since February of 1998.

I just recently got married. I used to be Jeanne Porting. My parents are Eugene and Darleen Porting of Beattie, Kansas. I went to school at Axtell and graduated from Axtell High School in May of 1991. Go Eagles!

Hello Axtell!!!! My name is Bella Tellstrom, and I was an exhange student in Axtell, and I graduated with the class of 88!!! I lived with the Nanningas, maybe somebody remembers me!! My life has turned out well, I currently study to become a history teacher at high school level, (thanks to Mr Wenz, the best teacher I've ever had) and I am expecting my first child. It would be nice if someone that remembers me would drop a line!! Nice homepage by the way, feels like I am "home" again!!! Lots of swedish hugs to all of you!!! Bella

Mark Lackey from Caney, KS writes:

Hello to everyone in Axtell, Kansas. I am Mark Allen Lackey, Son of Gary and Sharon Lackey. I am a Graduate of Axtell High School 1984. I'm currently Teaching Seventh Grade English at Independence Middle School. Independence is a 5A school. Our junior high girls basketball team was 8-3 this year. Track season is just around the coner and the students are getting spring fever. My wife, Krisit, and I have a very talented 3 year old daughter. Addie Mae Lackey. Basketball is one of her favorite sports along with dancing. We live at 101 West Second Ave. Caney, Kansas 67333. Phone 316-879- 5699. I'm very proud to be a graduate of Axtell High School. Kim Burton-Heiman of Axtell writes:

I am a 1984 graduate of Axtell. I think its great that so many of you are interested about your home town. It really hasn't changed a whole lot. We have a bunch of great people around here. Bruce and I have five wonderful little boys. I'm ever fortunate to get to stay home to raise them. We try to be active in our town so we both recently took EMT classes to run with the ambulance in town. Bruce is active with the fire department and of course having five boys involved in coaching baseball. Thanks again for thinking of your home town, theirs no place like home. If you are a 1984 graduate we have a reunion this summer on June 19, 1999. See you there.

I am a 1983 AHS graduate (that seems like a long time ago!). I moved to Idaho in 1989 and live in Idaho Falls with my husband, Scott, and two very lovely girls, Hannah (6) and Sarah (3). After graduation, I went to Cloud County Community College and on to Kansas State University. I work at the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory doing public relations work. CLASS OF 1969:

Pat Oenbring of Doha, Qatar writes:

I am a 1969 grad of AHS. I went to KU, and went to work in the oil patch. I currently work for Occidental Petroleum in Doha, Qatar. Qatar is a tiny Middle Eastern country north of Saudi Arabia, if you want to check it out on your globe.

I am impressed with the Axtell web site, and glad to hear from so many old grads. The web site is very well done and represents Axtell well. By the way, the class of 1969 had our 30th reunion on May 29. We had about 50 % attendance, and we enjoyed it. It's amazing how much better the stories get after 30 years!

I am writing to inform friends and class mates of Karl Nanninga that on Jan 13 he had a massive heart attack and died at the age of 51. He was in the class of 65. He had taught school for 30 years. His brother Terry still lives on the homeplace. Cards can be sent to his wife:

My husband Mel and I in 1993 moved to Mt. Moriah, Harrison County, Missouri. I am the Mayor of the Mt. Moriah Village, population a whopping 110. On July 4, 1998, a friend and I opened the Village Package Store, a small convience store. Mt. Moriah is located 13 miles east of Bethany, Mo. Bethany is on Interstate 35. We are half way between K.C., Mo. and Des Moines, Ia. We are about 14 miles from the Iowa line. We have 2 children, Angie and Jeff. Mel has his own carpentary business. CLASS OF 1956:

Gary & Eileen Johnson from Sparks, Nevada:

Eileen and I are both graduates of Axtell High School with the class of 1956. We now live in Sparks, Nevada after moving here from Olathe, Ks., in 1985. We both graduated from Washburn University with education degrees. I taught and coached on the high school level at Dover, Centralia, and Sabetha. After leaving the education field in 1968, I spent the next 26 years in the sporting goods industry. I retired in 1999 after serving as the Western Sales Manager for Russell Athletic. Eileen retired from teaching elementary school in Olathe, Ks., and Sparks, Nevada in 1998. Eileen grew up in the Swede settlement and is the daughter of Hubert and Verda Vandorn. My parents were Ted and Lucille Johnson of Axtell. We will celebrate our 45th high school reunion in 2001. Both of us are looking forward to the Axtell High School Alumni Banquet this coming Memorial Day weekend. We are extremely proud of our Axtell heritage. I'm a 1951 AHS grad, a K-Stater, retired from the Air Force here in Charleston in 1977, and have operated a tax and accounting business here since. Was pleasantly surprised to find your homepage while just surfing around for Marshall & Nemaha counties. (My wife Norma is a '54 grad from Centralia). Gerald "Buck" McAtee from Jewell, Kansas writes:

Hi to all the Axtell alumni. I was looking around and found the page and found it very interesting. I can still remember some of those that have added to the page. My name is Gerald "Buck " McAtee, son of Bill and Ruby McAtee. I am a graduate of the class of 1948. I worked for Nemaha Marshall Electric Coop after graduating and was drafted into the Marine Corps about 4 years later. After a 2 year hitch, I worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for a few months and then went to work at the Jewell- Mitchell Electric Coop in Mankato until my retirement in 1993. I was married to Betty Johnson, daughter of Ted and Lucille Johnson. Betty was a 1948 graduate also. We had one son, Steven, who is living in Pratt, Kansas now. Betty passed away in 1991 and I remarried in 1996 and am currently living in Jewell, Kansas.
